🛡️ How to Authorize Wash Sale Guard (One-Time Setup)

When you run the setup or reset process for the first time,

Google requires your permission to manage the spreadsheet's automated functions.

Follow these 3 quick steps to get started:

Step 1: The Initial Trigger Click the "Reset Entire Alerts" button

(or any button in the Master Controls section).

A box will appear saying "Authorization Required."

Click OK (or Continue).

Step 2: The "Advanced" Bypass A screen will appear saying "Google hasn't verified this app." Don't panic! This is standard for all private productivity scripts.

Click the small "Advanced" link in the bottom-left corner of the window.

  • Click the link at the bottom that says "Go to Wash Sale Guard (unsafe)".

  • Note: It says "unsafe" only because the script hasn't been submitted for a multi-month corporate review by Google. Since this script lives entirely within your own copy of the sheet, your trading data stays private to you.

Step 3: Confirm Permissions A list of permissions will appear (allowing the script to update cells and manage the "Alerts" tab). Scroll down and click Allow.

That’s it! The reset process will now run. You have successfully "unlocked" the engine, and you will never have to see these pop-ups again for this file.

Tips on How to Use the App:

The Wash Sale Guard app works best on a desktop or laptop computer.

The app comes with ROWS of SAMPLE DATA that act as a template/guide for new users.

You should CLEAR THESE SAMPLE TRADE ENTRIES by clicking on the MASTER CONTROLS button at the very top of the spreadsheet to start afresh.

AVOID USING THE DELETE FUNCTION OR DELETE KEY TO CLEAR DATA ROWS. Use MASTER CONTROLS/ CLEAR SELECTED ROWS instead.

Once a ticker becomes SAFE TO TRADE after the 30-day period wash sale period is over, click on MASTER CONTROLS / Run Archive Process Now to remove the ticker/trade entry to the Cleaned tab,

where it is automatically entered in the Tax Loss Harvesting Archive.

📈 The Daily Workflow

  1. Paste Trades: Open the Alerts tab and paste your realized losses

  2. into columns A-E.

  3. Check Alerts: If a ticker is marked "OFF LIMITS,"

  4. the app will calculate your "Reinstate Date."

  6. Pick a Proxy: Look at the Suggested Safe Proxies column

  7. to find a non-wash-sale alternative.

  9. Archive: Use the MASTER CONTROLS menu at the top

  10. to archive old trades once your "Days Away" reaches zero.
